Experienced architectural glazing specialists Hazlemere Commercial have completed a £2.3m installation project on a sustainability award-winning Devon school.
The Buckinghamshire firm, respected throughout the industry for its extensive expertise in the education sector, was contracted to supply and install window and door products for the recently-completed Bideford College building. Capable of housing 1,800 students, and part of the Launceston College Multi Academy Trust, the college was funded through the government’s now-defunct Building Schools for the Future programme. The overall scheme went on to win a coveted RIBA Award.
Working in collaboration with Devon County Council and UK construction group Morgan Sindall, Hazlemere designed, manufactured and fitted a large number of aluminium casements, as well as aluminium curtain walling and entrance doors.
The project required extensive effort in the façade engineering stage to incorporate Stow render panels, needed to achieve the wide spans desired while still giving the appearance of a seamless joint.
“One of the key stipulations of this project was maximising sustainability and energy efficiency,” explains Hazlemere Commercial Sales Director Tony Beale. “For that reason, we used Sapa 55 and 75 windows, manufactured from 100% recycled aluminium billet and capable of delivering outstanding thermal performance.”
Hazlemere Commercial also installed Sapa Elegance 52 aluminium curtain walling and Sapa Commercial aluminium entrance doors, as well as an impressive sloping aluminium roof lantern light measuring 70m in length.
“This was a challenging but extremely rewarding project for us,” commented Tony. “It’s been hugely satisfying for us to play a part in establishing a school that will service tens of thousands of students over the next few decades – and have ensured that the stunning new building will be as sustainable and thermally efficient as possible. We want to thank Morgan Sindall and Devon County Council for their help and co-operation throughout. We’re delighted by how the project turned out, and we hope to work with both organisations on other projects in the future.”
