Glass Futures Test Furnace Set To Drastically Cut Glass-Making Emissions With Siemens Technology


An experimental glass-making facility in St Helens, Merseyside is set to pave the way for significant emission reductions in glass manufacturing with support from Siemens technology.

The £54 million R&D project – funded by a combination of government support and its membership businesses – will model and develop an optimised approach for ‘boosting’ glass furnaces with electrical heating. Industry body British Glass estimates this approach will cut UK emissions from glass manufacturing by 56 per cent.

RISA has highlighted the benefits of pulse testing for window installations in properties where improved acoustic performance is the primary objective, but where customers are actually reporting worse noise levels, post installation, due to the specification of trickle vents.

RISA offers its pulse testing service to all installers. It was introduced following the update to Approved Document F for ventilation and indoor air quality, legislation that typically requires the use of trickle vents to be incorporated into new windows and doors.

Product quality, product range and customer service are the most important factors when choosing a door supplier, according to a customer survey conducted by Hurst to gather exclusive insights into installers’ views of the market.

And when it came to the door itself, 62% of respondents believed that the most important factor when selling a door to an end-user is its appearance and design, with 78% stating that they had seen an increase in demand for bespoke colours from homeowners.
