Technical Support Outweighs Price Of Glass, Says Glass Express Midlands

The price of glass is becoming less important to specifiers when they approach glass suppliers for product information, according to Birmingham-based Glass Express Midlands.

“The Building Regulations affecting the specification of glass are being updated all the time,” Glass Express Midlands’ technical manager Kirsty Fortnam said. “U-values, security, acoustics, solar control – understanding each of these elements is vital for companies specifying the right kind of glass into their projects.

“As a result, we get a lot of calls and emails from specifiers requesting technical information to help them meet their obligations.

Sustainability That’s ‘Measurable And Available For Scrutiny’

aluplast’s modern ecotech profile is helping to forge new relationships in the window supply chain. We talk to aluplast’s Director of Sales and Marketing Ian Cocken to find out more.

The term ‘sustainability’ was almost consigned to a meaningless tick-box term in the last decade, according to aluplast’s director of sales and marketing Ian Cocken, which would have let a lot of suppliers – those that hadn’t truly invested in sustainability – off the hook.

“Every end user – whether commercial specifier or homeowner – has a list of requirements when they buy their windows,” Cocken says.

How Window Widget’s Sustainability Strategy Encouraged Both Action And Attitude

Sustainability is a big deal for every company in every sector. To the point that it’s actually quite hard to know whether a company actually cares, or simply knows that they’re meant to. Greenwashing is a phrase everyone has likely been hearing recently.

According to the company, the antidote is evidence and action. Evidence not just of saying the right things, but of doing the right things at a corporate level. Window Widgets’ focus has been on doing just that – specifically by transforming how they deal with waste and using that as the first step of a long-term green strategy.

Fenestration Considerations for Healthcare

By Wojciech Brożyna – MD Aluprof UK

The key consideration for any hospital or healthcare facility is the well-being of patients, this can be evaluated as offering patient safety and providing a healthy environment to aid recovery. Whilst building fabric plays its part, fenestration, in the form of windows doors and curtain walls, offer an immediate link to the outside which can provide both a patient benefit and carry associated risks.

Murat Uyanmis, who served as project director at TP Bennet for over eight years and was involved in retrofitting the NHS Trust’s building at 18 Mole Park in Surrey which features Aluprof system comments:

Tapping Into Trends

Euroglaze has been manufacturing and supplying PVC-U frames to trade customers for more than 45 years. It has seen plenty of trends come and go as fashions have changed in home design and décor and new performance and security standards have come into play.

Like the rest of the market, there was a time in the 80s and 90s when all the PVC-U windows Euroglaze supplied were smooth white, and all the replacement doors were PVC panels. But, over the past 10 years in particular, its window output has been as much about foils and colours as it has about white, and its replacement door output has pivoted largely from PVC to composite.

Specifying & Maintaining Architectural Powder Coatings

By Angus Mackie – Qualicoat Chair

Powder coating was once seen as something that could be applied to aluminium to cover any irregularities, such as damage, corrosion, etc. Whilst this approach may allow the aluminium to look good for a few weeks or months after being coated, once weathered, the powder coating will quickly peel and fail. The reason for this is that powder coated finish is porous which allows moisture to reach the aluminium substrate where oxidisation will take place under the coating. Adhesion of the finish is also crucial and if the substrate does not offer a key, the powder coating can easily be chipped off.
