Builders’ Merchants See Slower Rate Of Recovery In August

 

Sales to builders by Britain’s builders’ merchants have continued to recover, but at a slower pace in August compared to the previous two months, according to the latest Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) report.

Although total builders’ merchants’ sales were 3.9% behind August 2019, daily sales were 0.9% above last year’s level when adjusted for the difference in trading days. Some categories continued to perform strongly.

Landscaping was the first category to recover following the sharp drop in April, and it has remained strong with August sales 16.3% higher than in the same period last year.

Contract Awards Continue Upwards Trend In September

 

The total value of construction contract awards in September 2020 was £5.4 billion based on a three-month rolling average. This is 21.2% higher than for August and is also 13.8% higher than September 2019. Quarterly analysis indicates that total construction contract awards were valued at £13.5 billion in Q3 2020. This is 47.1% higher than Q2 but is 8.4% lower than for Q3 2019. Raw monthly data has seen significant uplift in September to £6.0 billion which is an increase of 52.5% on the £3.9 billion in August.

The latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain.

Post-Lockdown Proves To Be Window Of Opportunity

 

Sash window manufacturer Roseview Windows has gone from strength to strength since reopening after lockdown. The return to work in May saw sales rising rapidly, with an exceptional level of window orders. Current forecasts predict that the number of windows Roseview manufactures this year will at least equal the total for 2019, despite having missed almost two months due to industry lockdown.

The challenges of well-documented supply chain issues currently affecting the whole industry mean that many companies are feeling the pressure as lead times are extended. Roseview has responded by sourcing alternative suppliers and overstocking on components wherever possible.

Record Sales Reported For AdminBase Management System

 

Ab Initio Systems Ltd, the company behind AdminBase installer sales and project management system, has reported consecutive record sales figures for the months of August and September, with indications that interest is continuing unabated.

Demand from new installers, as well as existing customers signing up new users as they increase staff levels to cope with the post-lockdown home improvement sales surge, took August sales to the highest level in the company’s 23-year history. Record Month For Rooflights

 

Following the trend for large, glazed extension projects in the domestic market, Jack Aluminium has experienced record sales on its TRL90 rooflight, with four times more profile sold in July than in any other month on record.

“As we returned to supplying fabricators after lockdown, we knew that there would be increased demand for product,” explains Jeff Pearson, Sales and Marketing Director at Jack Aluminium. “But this is unprecedented for us. Sales on rooflights increased fourfold in July, the biggest monthly sales ever for the TRL90 profile.
