Builders’ Merchants’ Sales Resilient In Third Lockdown

The latest Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) report shows that value sales in January by Britain’s builders’ merchants were 3.7% lower than in January 2020, as the country went into lockdown for the third time. However, there was a two day difference in trading days, and on an adjusted basis, total sales were 5.9% higher.

Year-on-year growth was driven primarily by three product categories. The largest contribution was made by Timber & Joinery Products, for which sales were up 7.7% on January 2020, while Landscaping (+3.7%) and Workwear & Safetywear (+2.4%) sales were also above last January’s level.

Market Confidence Driving Software Investment

If the market needed any more evidence about the accelerating pace of automation in the aluminium sector, it comes in the form of new figures released by software specialist BM Aluminium, which reveal almost a doubling in the number of CNC links currently being bought by fabricators.

BM Aluminium’s Managing Director Dean Hodges explains: “In a normal year, we would expect to be setting up between 20 and 30 new CNC machine links using our LogiKal software module, but we have set up that number just in the last six months, and demand shows no sign of slowing down.

“Clearly, it’s being driven by Covid on two different levels. One, using a CNC link can potentially reduce the number of people required in the workplace and help with social distancing,

A Classic-Ally Beautiful New Living Space

Mr & Mrs Forrester wanted to extend out from their kitchen and dining room to create a large lounge in which they could relax and entertain. Central to their vision was a space that allowed light to flood in and not make the adjoining rooms too dark. It had to fit in with the look and style of the existing property from the outside, and provide a comfortable room that was light, bright and suitable for year-round living on the inside.

The couple found their local Ultraframe installer SEHBAC at their local garden centre and began to discuss their ideas. They explained that they had originally wanted an orangery but felt the cost may prove too prohibitive. The team at SEHBAC designed them a stunning hybrid orangery featuring the Ultraframe Classic Roof. With the combination of glazing and solid areas, the space is warm and comfortable all year round and provides the perfect blend of modern and traditional styling.

Glass Visible To Birds Developed To Help Protect Wildlife

Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG Group, has developed Pilkington AviSafe™ – a new glass with a special coating designed to help prevent birds from colliding with the windows and facades of buildings.

Most birds collide with glass when they confuse what’s visible in its reflection for the real thing, such as trees or an open sky.

Pilkington AviSafe™ features a UV enhanced pattern that’s more visible to birds than it is to humans, which helps to prevent these collisions and ensures maximum transparency, while maintaining the aesthetical appeal of glass in architecture.

Step Up In Style

A stunning home renovation in Winchester was finished off with a dramatic entrance hall featuring a staircase with laminated toughed glass supplied by TuffX.

In keeping with the overall style of the revamped property, the staircase, featuring open risers and 17.5mm toughened and laminated glass, ensured an uninterrupted flow of light from the double height glass-fronted property right through the entire hallway.

Beech timber treads were chosen to complement the flooring, while the glass panels were bolted directly to the side of slim-line zig-zag steel stringers, which were powder-coated to match the property’s external doors and windows. The frameless glass panels were cut by TuffX to fit the stringer line, and then topped with a 50mm diameter beech handrail.
