Dear Gerald,

I write with increasing concern that despite The Department of Health, Estate and Facilities Alert EFA/2013/002 being more than five years old, we still see specifications for window restrictors coming through with nothing more than the BS Standard.

BS EN 13126-5:2011, the test for window restrictors, was singled out as inadequate by DoH for two issues. Firstly, testing to 500N is inadequate in preventing a determined effort to force a window open beyond the 100mm restriction. And secondly, that locked restrictors can be opened with commonly available flat bladed instruments as well as the ‘key’ provided.

GPD Decline Hitting UK Construction Overall But House Building Holds Steady By Bradley Post

According to recent figures, the UK economy’s been grinding its gears hard lately – and now it’s actually slipped into reverse. The Office for National Statistics is reporting that growth in Gross Domestic Product (the value of all the country’s goods and services produced) shrank 0.4% in a month. In fact the 2018 figures show that growth in the UK economy has now hit its lowest point since 2012. With an uncertain Brexit just weeks away and a skills shortfall crisis to contend with, these are uncomfortable numbers for the British construction industry.

Dear Gerald

Burglars using blow torches to gain entry through people’s front doors has made national news over the last week, with articles in the Daily Mail, The Sun and The Mirror. We have received many enquiries from concerned homeowners through social media channels about their safety.

The latest crime statistics also make for grim reading with robberies up 17% and the chances of being involved in a crime are now 1 in 5. The number of serving police officers has also fallen by over 20,000 in the last 8 years and so this latest means of forced entry is particularly alarming, as there are fewer policemen on the beat.
