Tavener Joinery Wins British Woodworking Federation Health And Safety Hero Award

Tavener Joinery, based in West Hampstead in north-west London, has won a prestigious national award from the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) for designing a system to remove fine dust from its workshop, boosting health & safety for its staff.

The joinery firm, established back in 1846, was presented with the Health & Safety Hero award, sponsored by Didac, at the 2018 BWF Awards. Now in their tenth year, the BWF Awards celebrate the best of the best in UK woodworking, recognising technical innovation, design, process efficiencies, health & safety and the rising stars of the industry.

Tavener Joinery created their own innovative solution extracting fine dust from their joinery workshop, which can be a significant health hazard for workers. Having spoken to various extraction companies who could not provide a solution to meet their needs, Tavener decided to create their own. Air quality has improved dramatically as a result of this, and they now can provide a cleaner and safer working environment.

Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of BWF who presented the award to Tavener Joinery, said:

“Well done to Tavener Joinery for making such a notable difference to health and safety practices.  The judges were very impressed with their design which goes above and beyond to ensure that the highest standards are met.

“We received an exceptional number of entries this year, so to come out on top is no mean feat. Our awards are a chance to showcase the talent and professionalism in the industry and bring people together to celebrate their achievements. This year’s awards were a great success once again and underline the huge contribution the woodworking and joinery sector makes to UK industry and manufacturing.”

Scott Harper, Joinery Manager at Tavener Joinery said: “It’s great to be recognised for a project which was hugely important in keeping employees safe and healthy at their place of work.  Health and safety is at the forefront of what we do – and we worked hard on improvements to reduce dust at source to help keep our employees safe.”

The prize was presented at a glittering awards evening held at Stationer’s Hall in central London.  A full list of the winners at this year’s BWF Awards can be found at: https://www.bwf.org.uk/bwf_pr/bwf-award-winners-2018/
